Recap from the Health Care Experience Design Conference

by Trapper Markelz, Head of Product

Original sketch notes by Sarah Mitchell (http://campl.us/SRT)
I had the honor of presenting at the first ever Healthcare Experience Design Conference in Boston on April 11, 2011. The goal was to bring together healthcare thought leaders, product developers, and design implementers to discuss the challenges and potential solutions that healthcare faces.
BJ Fogg kicked off the conference with a very relevant keynote around his Behavior Grid. Improving health always comes back to teaching people new behaviors, reinforcing existing ones, or terminating poor ones. The work that Fogg is doing in his lab around this is applicable to any product design, and we at MeYou Health are very influenced by his latest thinking.

My presentation was in the afternoon session, titled “Designing for the First Step.” My goal was to lay out the set of principals that MeYou Health follows in building our mass-market online health solution called Daily Challenge. I then spent the second half of my 20 minutes diving into some of the science-based approaches we are following to make sure that solution is effective.

In short, if we want to build a product that has real impact, the product must obtain reach by offering a realistic, convenient, immediate, and genuine solution. And that solution can be effective by leveraging the latest in game design, behavior science, and social network research.

You can check out my slides in PDF form, now posted on the HXD site.  You can also view my original PREZI (moving slides) online here.

Seeing conferences like this start to pop up is an encouraging sign. The health industry is starting to attract design thinkers who will bring all new priorities to a traditionally doctor/payer focused product design culture. The next few years in health should be really exciting if the Health Care Experience Design Conference is any indication.
