Games for Health Recap: A Monumental Step Forward for Health and Game Design

By Bill Sabram, Lead Game Designer

I spoke at the Games For Health Conference in Boston recently as part of the Mobile Serious Games Day.

This was my first talk at a major games conference, and it took place almost exactly one year after I joined MeYou Health as our lead game designer. Everything about the experience, including the iPhone app that I discussed at this year’s Games for Health Conference, was Monumental
The Games For Health Conference is such a wonderful mixture of hard-core gamers, health care professionals and technology enthusiasts, all united by a common goal: creating fun and engaging experiences that improve health and well-being. I met so many amazing people at the show -- including reporters who were kind enough to share the story of Monumental online.

While standing next to the expo display of Monumental’s massive user-experience maps, I spoke with Bridgette Collado of Pulse + Signal:

Historically, I’ve attended many Serious Games Summits to grow, network and get inspired. Presenting a talk on the making of Monumental, our iPhone stair-climbing game, opened up a deeper conference experience, because it gave voice to the years of hard work that has brought me to this point in my career. I had a great audience; they were really into the stories, developmental sketches and tips I shared.

Very exciting! Monumental v2.0 has a new look and three new ways to stay engaged.I am thrilled to be part of the team at MeYou Health who created a stair-climbing health game to help people improve their well-being. Version 2.0 of Monumental features completely new graphics and new social features to motivate you and your friends to take the stairs.

Here is a brief breakdown of the new social features to hold you over until you can hit “Install”:
  • Daily Climb Challenge - Receive a reminder to climb your current monument every day. Customize your step amount to meet your goal or ability.
  • Social Mountain - Combine all of your step amounts with those of your friends to climb an epic 35,000 steps to the top of Mount Olympus.
  • Social Timeline - Tilt the phone to view a 7- or 30-day chart of your step amounts. View your friend’s stair-climbing progress and see their earned souvenirs.

I look forward to hearing what you think about this update to Monumental once it’s available, and I hope to see you next year at another terrific Games for Health Conference.

Many people can't imagine that it takes years of hard work to develop a good game and promote it.
