After using tobacco for 40 years, Lore G. signed up for QuitNet when it was offered through her employer, but had little confidence she would be able to stop smoking. She says her true inspiration, however, came the day after she quit. Here’s her story.
The day after I quit, I created my top five reasons for quitting:
1. Sneaking around smoking so my grandchildren wouldn't see me.
2. Most of my friends don't smoke, and smoking around them made me uncomfortable.
3. Smelling like smoke – my hair, clothes – and bad breath.
4. My time – every day, every hour, every minute – was dictated by when I was going to have the next cigarette.
5. Concerns about my health.
I armed myself with every tool available, and little did I know how important QuitNet would be to me. It is a place where I can go every day to stand up and declare that I am a non-smoker. Only non-smokers know how important this is.
I thought it was my choice to smoke, that I enjoyed it, that it was something I was entitled to. Wow, was I wrong. Smoking is an addiction that tricked me into thinking I was in control. QuitNet changed my life.
When I first signed up for the program, I was offered several tools to assist me. I chose the nicotine gum and was assigned a coach. Staying connected to the QuitNet community online was so important to me, and still is. Every day I log in and take the pledge not to smoke. The support and encouragement I receive from other "Quitsters" is really amazing. You can ask for help, tell your story, offer words of encouragement to others, and read other people’s stories.
QuitNet also keeps track of milestones, days quit, money saved, cigarettes not smoked, and how many days of your life you gain back by not smoking. You even get a party hat as you reach milestones. These statistics really help motivate me.
I feel so lucky that I was able to beat this horrible addiction, and I will be forever grateful to QuitNet. Being a non-smoker has really made a difference in my life. My favorite part is the control I have over my time. My life is no longer controlled by the next cigarette.
If you're thinking about quitting, don't hesitate. It's easier than you think, and you deserve it! You're not alone. QuitNet offers support 24/7.
They have been with me every step of the way.
